Wildfire Safety

Colorado's ecosystems have developed with wildfire as a normal, and at times, regular disturbance event. Thousands of acres are burned every year in our grasslands, shrub lands and forests. The following websites and publications will help landowners understand fire's place in the environment, how they can protect their homes and properties from being destroyed during a wildfire, and how to recover after a wildfire has burned your property.

• Colorado Fire Bans - Colorado Division of Emergency Management - During fire season will list county, state and federal fire restrictions in Colorado.
• Colorado State Forest Service - This agency is responsible for wildfire on state and private land in Colorado. Their site contains information about wildfire, home and community protection, and fire suppression.
• Federal Emergency Management Agency - Contact information for Fire Management Assistance Grants.
• FireWise - National Program that assists homeowners and communities in preparing their property for the event of a wildfire.
• Front Range Fuels Treatment Partnership - a Colorado interagency program that reduces wildland fire risks through fuels treatments that are economically feasible, socially acceptable and ecologically sustainable.
• GEOMAC Wildland Fire Support - Allows firefighters and public to view maps of current and past wildfires.
• Incident Management Situation Report - Daily wildfire "Situation Reports" from the National Interagency Coordination Center in Boise, Idaho.
• Landhelp - Information on all aspects of land management including wildfire protection.
• National Fire Danger Map - Current wildfire danger for the United States (lower 48 states).
• National Fire News - Similar to Incident Management Situation Report - easier to read and has good links for additional fire-related information.
• National Interagency Fire Center - This site is geared towards the wildland fire professional. Has some in-depth information on wildfire topics.
• National Weather Service Forecast Office - Detailed weather information for most areas of the United States including forecasts.
• Rocky Mountain Area Fire and Aviation Management - Fire suppression information for Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming.
• Rocky Mountain Center Weather Intelligence - Observed and predicted weather reports for the Rocky Mountain area.
• Rocky Mountain Insurance Information - Tips for protecting your home from wildfire from a non-profit insurance information association.
• Rocky Mountain Wildland Fire Information - Contains a searchable database for fire grants and a listing of upcoming wildland fire suppression training events.
• Southwest Colorado Fires - Fire information clearninghouse for SW Colorado. Includes fire updates and restrictions.
• Treesearch - Access to US Forest Service research including wildfire.
