Extension Sites

Colorado State University Extension fact sheets on food safety. Also Nutrition News and Consumer Connection weeky columns, Healthy Aging monthly column.

The National Center for Home Food Preservation from the University of Georgia. This is a source for current research-based recommendations for most methods of home food preservation. The Center was established with funding from the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture (CSREES-USDA) to address food safety concerns for those who practice and teach home food preservation and processing methods.

Many state Extension Web sites have food safety publications available online.

State of Colorado

• Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment - Regulations, releases, office locations, local departments of public health, water quality, lab services.

National Food Safety Information Network The National Food Safety Information Network brings together the Federal Government's primary mechanisms for providing food safety information to the public. The "Network's" goal is to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the government's food safety information dissemination activities.

• FoodSafety.Gov is the Gateway to Government Food Safety Information.

U.S. Department of Agriculture

• Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) - health and care of animals and plants, including food animals.
• Extension Education and Extension Service - Research and education on nutrition and food safety, and many other programs.
• Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services - Food stamp and food distribution programs, childhood nutrition, WIC, library and archives.
• Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) - advisories, publications, releases, background information. FSIS also offers information on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP).
• National Agriculture Library (NAL) - international source for agriculture and related information.
  • Food and Nutrition Information Center has publications, searchable database, school meals, WIC information. Additional information on HACCP is also available here.
• News and Information - News releases on food safety and other agricultural issues.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

• Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) - Health information, statistics and publications; it is searchable.
• National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID) maintains a list of common foodborne infectious diseases, with information about causes, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as other information.
• Food and Drug Administration (FDA) - News, drugs, food labeling, tobacco information.
  • The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) has programs, publications (some in Spanish, French and Russian), contacts, and links.
  • CFSAN also maintains the Bad Bug Book with basic facts on bacteria, protozoa, worms, viruses and natural toxins.

Organizations

American Dietetic Association and National Center for Nutrition and Dietetics has resources, updates on legislation and public policy, daily tips.

Compliance Control Center is devoted to information on the importance of handwashing.

International Food Information Council - This nonprofit organization was established to provide sound, scientific information on food safety and nutrition to journalists, health professionals, educators, government officials and consumers. It offers backgrounders, reports, Q&A on foodborne illnesses, pesticides, sweeteners, nutrition and health, allergies, and more. There is also an extensive list of government agencies, agriculture and food industry organizations.
