Project Handwashing

Developed in 2001 by CSU Extension, the 45-minute Fight BAC™ with Hand Washing program is still popular with grade school children today. The program includes options of different activities that are age appropriate for 4-6 grade students and additional activities to choose from for K-3 grade students.

The program includes a bacteria discussion, role playing steps for handwashing, washing hands and viewing under a UV light, a coloring book activity (which reinforces when children should wash their hands) and pre/post evaluation (pictorial quiz for young children). Of course, the 'FIGHT BAC' hand puppet adds to the fun and can be ordered from the FIGHT BAC website. For older children, leaders can include a hands-on science experiment by plating bacterial samples (from finger prints, doorknobs, desktops, etc.) on agar and viewing bacterial growth later under a microscope.
