In response to increasing consumer concern about food safety at farmers' markets, the Colorado Farmers' Market Association, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Colorado Department of Agriculture and Colorado State University Extension teamed up this winter to develop new "Food Sampling Guidelines for Farmers' Markets." These guidelines and how to implement them at farmers' markets and road-side stands will be covered in one of three trainings being offered this spring by the above team. Other topics to be covered in the trainings include Food Safety from Farm to Market, Marketing Products at Farmers' Markets, and the Health Department's Role at Farmers' Markets.
Master gardeners, Master Food Preservers, Extension agents, and Health Department officials that work with growers and home gardeners who sell their produce at road-side stands and farmers' markets are all encourage to attend. There is no charge for the trainings, but pre-registration is required. Participants that attend will receive a laminated "certificate of completion" that they can display at their stand, showing that they have completed the training and agree to follow the guidelines. Consumer education is also being planned so that people will know to look for vendors who follow the guidelines.
The dates, locations, times and contacts for the trainings are listed below. Note that the training in Grand Junction is part of the day-long Western Small Acreage Expo, and will only cover the food sampling guidelines and food safety from farm to market sessions.
