Electron Beam Used for Meat Irradiation

Concerned about radioactive cobalt or possible changes to taste and texture of meat that has undergone irradiation? Titan Corporation will use electron-beam (E-beam) irradiation to pasteurize ground beef, chicken, fish, processed foods and packaged meats.

One benefit of the E-beam is that it utilizes electricity vs. radioactive isotopes. Another potential benefit is that the E-beam is less likely to affect the texture and taste of meat because it will not raise the product temperature more than 1 degree F. Titan Corporation states that E-beam technology is better than gamma ray and x-ray because it's faster and cheaper, and it does not require extensive radiation shielding.

Sioux City, Iowa, will house the new Titan Corporation food irradiation plant using the E-beam technology. For more information visit Titan Corporation's web site at: http://www.titan.com.
