Unpasteurized orange juice is the latest product to be recalled due to microbial contamination. On November 12, 1999, Sun Orchard, Inc. of Tempe, Arizona, issued a warning that several lots of unpasteurized orange juice, which they manufacture under a variety of brand names, may have been contaminated with Salmonella. On November 19 the advisory was expanded to an additional lot and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a consumer warning not to drink these products.
The first recall involved Sun Orchard, Sysco, Aloha, and Zupan branded unpasteurized orange juice products distributed to restaurants and other food service establishments in California, Washington, Oregon, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Arizona, and British Columbia, Canada, and to one retail store, Zupan Grocery, in Portland, Oregon. These products were sold in gallon, quart, pint and 1/2-pint clear plastic containers marked with:
The expanded recall added unpasteurized orange juice sold in gallon and 1/2-gallon containers identified with the lot –9308 "Enjoy by" 11/20/99. This lot was distributed to hotels, restaurants and other food service establishments in Illinois, Kansas, and Michigan.
Production of the product has been suspended and the investigation as to the source of the problem continues. Consumers with questions can contact the company at 1-800-505-8423.
