In this Issue
With the advent of spring weather and summer barbecues around the corner, this issue of Healthy Heart Beats can help you plan for meals on the grill. The recipes we've included will add flair to your dishes and you'll even find suggestions about how to use the grill to make your dessert. Enjoy!
Women's heart health is featured this month as the American Heart Association (AHA) released new guidelines in 2007. National Women's Health Week is scheduled for May 13-19, 2007. This year's theme is "It's Your Time: Pamper Your Mind, Body and Spirit." The week is designed to highlight women's health issues and promote healthy lifestyles for women. The week also includes a celebration of Women's Check-up Day on May 14 to promote health screenings. This issue of Healthy Heart Beats should help you provide current information on this important topic.
More news from AHA reminds us that May is National Hypertension month. World Hypertension Day is May 17, and AHA President-elect Daniel Jones, M.D., says it's an opportunity "to remind us to pay more attention to this risk factor" that affects 72 million U.S. adults age 20 and older. "On World Hypertension Day, we should look with optimism at what can be done to improve cardiovascular risk around the world through focusing on better management of hypertension," said Jones and co-author John Hall, Ph.D., in an editorial in Hypertension: Journal of the American Medical Association. Hall is Hypertension's editor. Nutrition and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet featured in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines provides an excellent focus for your educational programs and newspaper articles. Access the CSU Extension fact sheets for handouts - go to http://www.ext.colostate.edu/menufood.html, and click on "Fact Sheets." Take advantage of May as hypertension month to provide articles on nutrition, and use the recipes to highlight the concepts of eating more fruits and vegetables.
We are often asked to comment on specific articles that appear in the popular magazines so take note of the article that addresses the accuracy of nutrition information in today's magazines. This information may also be helpful in your teaching. We have greatly appreciated the assistance of Shelley Prior, a graduate student who is an American Dietetic Association Intern in our department of Food Science and Human Nutrition here at Colorado State University. She contributed the article reviewing popular magazines and the information on grilling to this newsletter.
Enjoy your outdoor activities and we hope the last of the snow is falling for the year. As I write this, another winter storm is brewing and depositing snow in the mountains and rain here in Fort Collins!
Here's to summer and the barbecue!
