I want to give you some additional information relating
to previous columns. Some time ago I mentioned a problem I
had with a mortgage company. After I wrote a letter to the
Comptroller of the Currency (the regulatory agency for
federally chartered banks), the mortgage company stopped
harassing me and sent a letter to the three credit bureaus
(TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax). When I checked to make
sure the negative information was taken off of my credit
report, I had an unpleasant surprise.
In August 1998, I had requested a copy of my credit
file from TransUnion because I had been reported as paying
180 days late on a loan. The information was inaccurate and
TransUnion removed the information from my credit report in
September 1998. However, the loan company did not notify the
other two credit bureaus, Experian and Equifax. More than a
year later the incorrect information was still included on
my file at the other two credit bureaus. I requested that
each credit bureau investigate this information, and it has
now been removed. It is important to work with all three
credit bureaus to get inaccurate information removed from
your files.
Last week I suggested places to use computers if you
don't own your own. I just learned that in addition to the
public library branches, the senior center, Poudre Valley
Hospital, and Kinkos, there are three PostNet stores in Fort
Collins that offer Internet access. They are open 8 a.m. -
6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
on Saturday. They can generally help customers with
computers during business hours. Prices may vary between
stores so check the Yellow Pages for the closest store and
call for price information.
I had a call from a reader asking about Internet
services in Fort Collins. If you travel a lot, a national
Internet service offers local numbers in many parts of the
country, which will avoid long-distance charges. If you use
your computer to access the Internet from your home in Fort
Collins, a local Internet service will work just fine.
Does anyone know of an evaluation of Internet services
(including local ones) that is available through a
publication or located at a Web site? Please let me know and
I will pass on the information to readers.

Colorado State University Extension office.
