Colorado Master Gardener OnLine

CMG OnLine: Instructions and Background

Welcome to Colorado Master Gardener OnLine, our new option for CMG Volunteer continuing education.

Access -- Copyright law requires that access be limited to students currently enrolled in the class, that is CMG volunteers. To handle this, we use VMS as our access portal. However, the actual videos are on a different server so you will have to enter a user name and password as you move from the VMS server to the CMG OnLine server. The password will change frequently and the current password will always be found on VMS Homepage News. To avoid login problems, always enter through VMS where you will be given the current password information. CMG OnLine is a benefit of being a CMG Volunteer. Please do not share it with non-volunteers.

Video Controls -- Videos are in MP4 video format which will play on most desktop browsers and many newer mobile devices. When you run the mouse over the play screen, it brings up the control bar at the bottom of the play screen. This is used to pause/play the video, quickly move around in the video, adjust volume (your speaker controls also adjust volume) and to toggle to full screen. If you have a large screen, the toggle to full screen may oversize the picture, making it fuzzy. You can also size the play screen in your browser. For example, in newer versions of Explorer, controls to resize the play screen are in the lower right-hand corner of the Explorer window.

We are aware that some CMG volunteers have old computers systems with out-of-date software versions. We don't know what to expect on outdated computers, but could find that some old computers/software versions simply won't play the MP4 videos. Also, some companies and government agencies block streaming video on their networks.

Many have asked is there a limit on the number of classes that may be taken. No, take whatever you find of interest. From time to time, a county may request that you take a specific class where they find a particular educational need among their volunteers.

The benefit of online classes is that you take the classes at times and locations convenient to you. In the CMG Program, the demand for continuing education has greatly exceeded available staff time to offer onsite classes. The online videos are a new option to expand CMG continuing education.

Recording Hours -- Be sure to report your continuing education hours on your county VMS site under CMG Online. VMS and CMG OnLine do not communication between each other about your participation. Count the actual hours that you actually spend on the class (length of the videos is given on the homepage). Some individual may sail thorough a video, others may spend more time backing up to help capture some of the content. Some units, like Water Wise Landscape Design, have a worksheet associated with it.
