Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Online Support
Welcome
Welcome to Colorado State University’s Grandparent’s Raising Grandchildren (GRG) Online Support website established in 2008 for Colorado’s grandfamilies (grandparents and other relatives caring for children) through funding provided by a Colorado State University Extension Innovation Grant. This website was designed to provide peer support and reliable, current information as a result of the growing number of grandfamilies in Colorado. Over the past decade, the number of custodial grandparents in Colorado increased by 73% compared to the national increase of 30% (U.S. Census, 2000). In Colorado, it is estimated that 28,524 grandparents are responsible for the basic needs of their grandchildren.
Local grandparents raising grandchildren have expressed a desire to have an online support program to overcome barriers of time, isolation, or the chaos associated with a family crisis. Resources for grandfamilies need to be available 24/7 to provide support. This GRG Online Support website includes blogs, discussion boards, a listing of grandfamily support groups in Colorado, frequently asked questions, publications, and links to other resource guides. It is our purpose to increase grandparents’ knowledge about the issues affecting them, while empowering and uniting grandparents who may feel isolated, invisible, or overwhelmed.
