There are many resources available to grandparents raising grandchildren throughout Colorado but navigating them can be challenging. Below are some general tips to help you avoid a few of the speed bumps you may hit along the way. Getting Through Tough Financial Times (4/09)

Grandparents raising grandchildren, who have already faced many ongoing adjustments, now fear how they can handle additional financial stresses in the midst of rising consumer debt, falling housing prices, and the rising costs of living. Many have sacrificed their life savings to save their grandchild. Most common for grandparents is the impact related to the costs of raising children in a world of fixed retirement incomes. For younger grandparents, there is also the strain of having to provide additional monies while still working for the same pay check. Children Living with Grandparents – Staying Connected to the Familiar (2/09)

Children living with their grandparents may face a lot of changes. Some changes are harder, such as when they must move away from one home to another. Other changes are easier, but are still important to the child, such as returning from a visit with a parent. Having a routine and knowing what to expect are very important for a young child. Any change can be difficult for a child, and sometimes children react negatively before, during, or after a visit.
