2007 Top Extension Stories from the Director:
Resources, communications, leading by learning

CSU Extension thrives. Despite challenges in funding higher education in the state, Extension is developing new opportunities for funding programs -- emphasizing grants, contracts and endowments. CSU Extension in Adams County received the first ever endowed position for 4-H Youth Development, thanks to the generous support of a local family. Extension established new goals for garnering support from local advocates and clientele. Thirteen new staff have been hired since 8/1/07, including county agents, regional specialists, assistant director/finance, and technology and communications/marketing coordinators. All are bringing high energy and great ideas.

CSU Extension reaches out to all. By communicating, in many ways, with county commissioners, state and county advisory boards, and residents of the state, Extension is committed to addressing the needs of Colorado. The 2007 annual report showcased real Coloradans benefiting directly from Extension programs. In a matter of months the report was distributed more widely than any previous annual report. Informational articles in newsletters, magazines and newspapers continue to market the organization. Extension is frequently represented on a dozen radio broadcasts and one TV show across the state. The Extension website is being renewed and reviewed for launch in mid-2008. Plans are underway to use new technology to reach new Colorado audiences - whether it's using podcasts, vcasts, blogs or on-line courses.

New Extension Director learns about the state. In her first five months in Colorado, Young visited counties and extension offices across the state, attending workshops and seminars in all program areas. She met with faculty and administrators in the Colleges of Agricultural Sciences, Applied Human Sciences, Natural Resources, Veterinary Medicine and Engineering. Round tables were held for all specialists as well. Constituents from organizations around the state provided valuable input, including Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, Colorado Farm Bureau, Colorado Livestock Association, Colorado State Fair, Colorado Cattlemen's Association, Colorado Department of Agriculture, Colorado State Conservation Board and Colorado Counties Inc., and Central Colorado Water Conservancy District. Two issues identified in these conversations, which Extension has opportunities to address, are water and energy.

User Fees Report

Social Work Center for Lifelong Learning and Outreach Education

The School of Social Work has formed the Social Work Center for Life Long Learning and Outreach Education (CLOE). Nancy Banman, Extension specialist, serves as the director. Underserved populations will be reached, especially those in more rural areas of Colorado. Programs include distance education opportunities, certificate programs, workshops, institute trainings, and special projects. It hopes to support the goals of CSU Extension by designing evaluation instruments, providing knowledge for sustainable community development, developing social capital leadership education programs, and forming strong collaborative relationships with the communities of Colorado. Deborah Valentine, Director, School of Social Work was honored recently with the Presidential Award from the Council on Social Work Education at the annual national conference in San Francisco. She has also created an office of outreach education concerned with meeting the education and training needs of social workers and human services agencies throughout Colorado. Congratulations to Dr. Valentine for this honor!

Retirement...

Doug Hall (campus) began his career with CSU Extension on June 6, 1980, and retires on December 31, 2007. During his career, he enjoyed working for a number of different Extension Directors and with all the state and county Extension employees throughout the state. Per Doug, he will miss working with co-workers that have great 'people skills' but he is looking forward to spending more time with his family and working on his hobbies. Doug and his wife Marian will continue to reside in the Ft. Collins area after he retires.

Frank Sobolik (Pueblo) retired on January 3, 2008, with a reception planned for January 30 at 1:00 p.m. at the Old Towne Carriage House, 102 S. Victoria on the HARP, Pueblo. Frank has been employed in government service positions for almost 44 years, 33.5 years of which have been spent as an Extension Agent. He began his career in Extension with North Dakota State University in 1974 as an Area Agronomy Agent and transferred to Colorado State University in the summer of 1989 to the position of County Director in Pueblo County. Frank's main program area centered on agriculture and horticulture plus all of the necessary administrative duties assigned a county director. He has served as president of ESP and CCAA and has been active in both organizations at the state and national level. Frank has been very supportive of the 4-H/Youth Development and Consumer and Family Science programs and has worked with the staff assigned primary responsibility for these areas to bring new processes and ideas to Pueblo County. In his role as county director, Frank has become acquainted with all the local legislators, county commissioners as well as additional leaders across Colorado. He has served as a representative for Pueblo County on the Colorado Counties Incorporated Agriculture Committee and was the educational liaison for a 13 county coalition of commissioners in southeastern Colorado. Frank says he is not retiring, just moving on to another interesting and challenging opportunity. Real estate (license and opportunity forthcoming) will allow him to join his life partner, Jan, in a whole new world still working with people. We wish him the best.

Nancy Race (campus) will retire on January 31, 2008. After earning her B.A. at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, Nancy lived in many states and in Costa Rica and Peru. She was an assistant in the Department of Agricultural and Resources Economics from 1980 until joining CSU Extension in 2004. Nancy enjoyed the people in Extension. A reception will be on January 25 in the Student Center at 3:00 p.m. Her retirement plans include more time with her husband Tracy, travel, volunteer work, reading and gardening.

Sympathy to...

Milan Rewerts (retired, campus) on the recent death of his sister in Texas.
