Deborah Young, Director

From the Director - Deborah J. Young

Have you ever heard the program on National Public Radio called "This I believe"? Here's what I believe about Extension.

Land-grant universities represent the most original and distinctive contribution the United States has made to higher education (as suggested by Arnold Toynbee, the British historian). CSU Extension has the opportunity to demonstrate a model of engagement that reaches all the people of Colorado.

Our programs are unbiased and based on science; this makes them more valuable. By strengthening our partnerships between campus and counties, all of our programs can demonstrate a research base and all of our staff can be involved in applied research in some way.

Volunteerism helps build social capital by building more cohesive communities, fostering greater trust between citizens, and developing norms of solidarity and reciprocity which are essential to stable communities. In 2006, 10,263 volunteers assisted county Extension programs. We can support our volunteers with training in both content and development. As the Colorado Master Gardeners in Denver recently demonstrated, they will support us with elected officials.

Communities and adults can work together, through 4-H youth development, to support the healthy development of all youth. There are many opportunities for all Extension faculty and staff to work with youth, and to include youth on boards and committees.

Because Extension staff, based in county offices, are part of the community, we can provide an educational product that is unique to that found on campus. We are part of the community and regularly seek input from advisory councils and committees, elected officials, participants and volunteers. Our connection with the Office of Outreach and Strategic Partnerships can provide new opportunities for Coloradoans for credit, non-credit and certificate courses as well.

My goal: Extend the concept of a "land-grant university" to position Colorado State University, across all colleges and units, as a model for linking scholarship and creativity to society and community needs. What do you believe?

4-H Youth Development Endowment . . .

Walter and Rose Stonehocker of Adams County have donated a $1.5 million endowment to support a Colorado State University Extension agent position for 4-H youth development in Adams County. Their donation was presented to Extension during the annual Colorado State University Extension Forum Awards Banquet on Thursday, Oct. 4. Combined with other funding sources, the Stonehocker endowment will help Adams County develop new and innovative 4-H youth development programs while maintaining a successful 4-H legacy. Walter Stonehocker has been associated with 4-H since 1936. The family has seven children, six of whom graduated from Colorado State University and one from the University of Northern Colorado. This is a first-of-its-kind endowment for a Colorado State Extension county position in Colorado. With federal and state funding flat and many counties struggling to maintain non-mandated budgets, individual or corporate support for valued community resources is becoming critical.           Excerpt from Today @ Colorado State, October 8, 2007

Announcements

Thank you to...

Doug Hall (campus) for his valuable service and commitment to Colorado State University for over 28 years. He began his CSU career upon earning his B.S. here in 1980. His dedication and leadership in Extension over the years has resulted in an efficient and effective fiscal unit. Co-workers appreciated his steady guidance through challenging times of economic and technological changes. With Doug's help employees were given a clear understanding of the civil service, federal and PERA retirement systems-not a small task! We wish Doug the best in his upcoming retirement at the end of December.

Sympathy to...

Joy and Troy Bauder (campus) on the recent death of Joy's father, Ed White.

Billie Malchow (retired, Teller) on the recent loss of her two nephews. Cards may be sent to 704 West 5th, Axtell, Nebraska 68924.

Marlo Meakins (former regional director) on the recent death of his son, Erik. Cards may be sent to 321 Orilla del Lago, Fort Collins, Colorado 80524.

There was a service at the United Methodist Church in Hotchkiss on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 10:00 a.m. with interment which immediately followed at the Cedaredge Cemetery. The family plans to have a service in Fort Collins sometime before the Christmas holidays. Cards may be sent to his daughter, Mrs. Betty Wolverton, 732 Barrow Mesa Road, Hotchkiss, Colorado 81419.
