From the Interim Director - Marc A. Johnson

Deborah Young Named Director -- Colorado State University Extension

Vice Provost Swanson has selected Dr. Deb Young as the new Director of Colorado State University Extension /Associate Provost. Deb's appointment is effective August 1. I encourage you to give your full cooperation and support to her as she provides leadership to Colorado State University Extension. Deb has more than 23 years of experience in Extension in Arizona, including service as Extension agent, specialist, county director and, beginning in 1997 to the present, Associate Director for the University of Arizona Extension. She completed her Ph.D. with the University of Arizona in plant pathology in 1982. Deb will represent Colorado State University at the summer meeting of Directors, in July, as our Extension Director designate. We look forward to Dr. Young's arrival to assume this important leadership position with Colorado State University Extension. I want to add my congratulations and best wishes to Deb!

Building Brand Awareness for CSU Extension

Colorado State University Extension's diversity in programming and audiences is one of our greatest historic strengths. As we move into the future, Extension's mission is as important as ever in providing rational healthy growth for all Colorado citizens and a channel for the exceptional contributions of the entire university. Our challenge is to communicate our mission, our public value, and our single identity across our diverse local cultures and programs to gain the support and recognition that can really make a difference in our impact in the future. This new look is a first step. Our actions, enthusiasm, courage and tenacity will now make the real difference. Over the summer you will begin to see more tools and more opportunities to spread our Colorado State University Extension brand throughout our organization and the state.

National Leadership Development

Meg Wilson, Director of Community Relations, attended the Public Issues Leadership Development Conference sponsored by the Joint Council of Extension Professionals in Washington, D.C. on April 23-25, 2007. The overall theme of the conference was "Connectivity: Community to the Capitol" with an eye to improving Extension's communications internally and externally at all levels regarding the roles, successes and value of our organization. This was a particularly timely year for Meg to attend with her charge of significantly raising campus and statewide awareness of Colorado State University Extension. Sessions included building Extension's public value demonstration, communicating with rather than merely marketing to the public, Extension's voice in the political arena, and several sessions from the USDA, most notable on alternative Energy Use and Extension's educational role. During a panel discussion breakfast Carmela Bailey from the USDA mentioned the Colorado Alternative Energy Conference for Agents as a leadership example of steps into the future for Extension and Undersecretary Gale Buchanan mentioned the Colorado Alternative Energy Conference again during his closing remarks. On the last day of the conference delegations from each state visited Capitol Hill and carried important national and individual state messages to their respective legislators. Meg met with the offices of 8 out of 9 U.S. Senators and Representatives for the State of Colorado and had the opportunity to discuss the value of Colorado State University Extension to the Colorado citizens and show and leave a few examples. The conference was Meg's first real chance to meet a wide variety of Extension public relations and marketing representatives from across the nation providing a superb introduction to the wider Extension community. These connections and the lessons learned should all benefit our current efforts to brand within the state.

Director's Administrative Council

At the DAC meeting on May 30, 2007, the ongoing discussion about Campus evaluation input for agents, especially FSNE and jointly appointed agents continued. Input by the county directors will be solicited on this topic. DAC discussed joint departmental appointments for agents. A survey of the organization concerning in-service training needs is planned. Concerning FY2007-08, operating funds to specialists and regions will not change. We are currently working on a marketing budget. It was agreed to send out correspondence to the Colorado county commissioners concerning premises ID in the counties. The Program Leadership Team will look at the contribution reports system and a team will structure it as needed. This year we are finishing up our seven-year Plan of Work and will start a new POW next year. A requirement will be to identify specific impacts that are quantifiable. The climate of the organization's internal diversity issues was addressed. The next DAC teleconference will be on June 26.

State Budget

The General Assembly has adjourned for the year. State funds, together with tuition revenues, will generate $38 million more in revenue for the university than we had available last year. One goal is to add a number of tenure track positions to be placed by August 2008. However, there will be flat funding for the extension and college organizations except for salary increments. Thus, operating and travel budgets for our operations will be pretty flat and we will have to do some budget rearranging to meet some of our new goals.
