From the Interim Director - Marc A. Johnson

Emergency Action in Southeastern Colorado

I would like to recognize the quick responses of Leonard Pruett, Bruce Fickensher, Kaye Kasza, Dean Oatman, Kevin Larson, Tom McBride, John Scanga, Jessica Davis, and Scott Brase in assisting southeastern Colorado citizens, the Colorado Department of Agriculture, the State Veterinarian, NRCS, and the State Emergency Management Office during the latest, disastrous snow storm in southeastern Colorado. (I apologize for omitting others who may have been involved.) State officials have expressed appreciation for the efforts of our county extension agents for helping with communications and agricultural knowledge during a time of high-expected death losses of livestock resulting from blizzard conditions. Kevin is the research director of the AES research center in Walsh (Baca County). Tom is our principal contact for EDEN. John and Jessica provided expertise to state agencies for options of disposing of carcasses and land application of the remains. Scott has worked a lot of extra time with the Hay Airlift and is currently keeping in contact with feedlots and reports on their death losses. Stepping up in times of emergency conditions with knowledge and communications linkages is an invaluable service to our citizens and reinforcement of the importance of maintaining expertise in our counties. Thanks.

What Customers Value

Meg Wilson loaned me a book on "The Value Added Organization." I'm confident that Meg will share more of the contents, but I wanted to share a couple of items. The author did a survey of a large number of customers of many types of companies and organizations (some non-profit) and ordered the 36 most important characteristics customers want from their "suppliers." Extension is a supplier of knowledge, education, and developmental activities.

The top ten in order are:

  1. Customers want to deal with knowledgeable people.
  2. Customers want a quality product or service.
  3. Customers want quick availability.
  4. Customers want support after the sale.
  5. Customers want to deal with organizations which are easy to deal with.
  6. Customers want performance from products or services they receive (purchase)
  7. Customers want to deal with people who deliver on their promises.
  8. Customers want to deal with people who create results.
  9. Customers want value at least equal to what they pay.
  10. Customers want to buy from people who have what they need.

Extension has placed knowledgeable people with hopeful longevity in local county offices, so we are positioned to be a highly effective customer-service organization. Continuously opening the "front door" to wider segments of our county citizens, in smart ways, will continue to build the strength of Extension.

The author also makes a point that continuously giving additional services for free causes customers to come to expect more and more from an organization for free, and to perceive less and less value for services provided without charge. Evaluating our program fees to reflect value rendered is a continuous, but important challenge.

Director of Extension Search

We have a good number of candidates for the Extension Director position and the search committee will be discussing them soon. Interviews likely will occur in February 2007.

Annual Forum in October 2007

The 2007 Forum Committee would like to alert you to the dates for Forum this year. Annual Forum will be October 1-5, 2007.

Happy New Year!

I wish all in the organization the best of possibilities in the new year.

Interim Director

Agent and Specialist Work Team Contribution Reports Due

2006 Work Team Contribution Reports are due to work team leaders and immediate supervisors by January 31st, 2007. The report covers programming efforts during the 2006 calendar year just completed. The form is available on the CSUE website under staff resources / program planning and reporting / work team contribution report or at www.ext.colostate.edu/menustres.html.

The work team contribution report allows agents and specialists to communicate the intent, the activities and the outcomes of their local/regional/state programming efforts to their work team leaders and supervisors. The one page word document can be accessed on the website, completed and submitted electronically.

As agents and specialists did not have specific plans to invest for the 2006 calendar year, you are asked to submit a report to those teams on which you were actively involved, engaged in programming. If a report fits more that one work team, list the teams on the report and submit a copy to each.

The content of work team contribution report will be used in several ways:

  • Program information will be used to complete Extension's annual Federal Report and to provide content for Extension's Annual Report to the legislature and local decision makers.
  • The contribution report may also be used to address or provide support for an agent or specialist's performance appraisal documentation. The report addresses many of the PRRS program planning, delivery and reporting benchmarks. Attach the report(s) to the documentation and add additional information, if needed, to make it complete.
  • The reports will also allow work teams and their leadership to better understand, focus and support what agents are doing, using, accomplishing and needing in terms of programming; let go of what is not as important.

If you have questions about the report, please visit with your county or regional director.

Western Extension Leadership Development

Colorado will be sending representatives to the WELD program. The Western Extension Leadership Development (WELD) program is a two-year program designed for Extension agents and specialists in the Western United States and Territories. Congratulations to the 2007-08 WELD Interns -- Holli Bowman, Gary Hall, and Wendy Rice.

Archive Publications and Other Materials

Do you or your office have copies of old and new Extension and Agricultural Experiment Station Publications that you don't use anymore? I'm talking about bulletins, budget documents, county reports, research reports, 4-H manuals and fact sheets. They are also interested in collecting photographs, ribbons and all kinds of associated materials. I have been working with the archives to expand their collections over this last year and we are asking for your help. Call me at the Resource Center (970.491.6198) if you have questions.

The Colorado State University Archives wants these documents. They are hiring, on a one-year appointment, an Agricultural Reference Librarian to work on Extension and AES publications. So this is the year to clean out your office, your bookshelves and your closets and donate those publications to the CSU Library. Do not sort out what you think the Archive might want, they want all the publications you have. Just box up the publications and the next time you are on campus you can drop the boxes at the Library Annex on Lake Street.

In the past all Extension and AES publications were not collected at the library and that has created large gaps in the available knowledge of what Extension and AES has done for the state of Colorado. If you have questions, please call the Agricultural Archivist, Linda Meyer at 970.491.4692 or Coordinator of Special Collections, Janet Bishop at 970.491.7787. If you want to mail items, please use this address, Morgan Library, Archives and Special Collections, Campus Delivery 1019, Colorado State University, Fort Collins CO 80523-1019.

Retiree news...

Leonard Pruett (Southeast) is retiring from his livestock specialist and area director position on January 31, 2007. He received a B.S. degree in Vocational Agriculture at CSU in 1965 and his Masters degree in adult education in 1971. After teaching Vo-Ag for three years in Colorado, Leonard began his extension career in Trinidad in 1968. After a year at the Philmont Scout Ranch he returned to extension in 1970 in Springfield to become a livestock specialist in the newly formed Southeast Area which stated in January 1971. He as been dedicated to extension, the 4-H program and Southeast Colorado ever since. He developed the southeast Colorado feedlot test; was involved in developing the S.E. Colorado bull test. Leonard served ten years as adult advisor for Colorado Junior Cattlemen Association. He has been honored as a life member of Bent-Prowers Cattle and Horse Growers Association and has worked with the National Western Stock Show, and the Colorado State Fair for approximately 30 years. Leonard and his wife, Mary Lynne, have three children and five grand children. They plan to do some traveling following retirement and continue to live in Colorado where two of their children live. Leonard has "some" old trucks and tractors to restore which will keep him busy well into retirement.

Rita (Underwood) Bingham (campus) is retiring from her position as Office Manager in the Administration Budget and Fiscal Office on January 31, 2007, after 26 years at Colorado State University. Twenty of those years were with CSU Extension. She is looking forward to traveling, spending time with her grandchildren and enjoying the mountains.

Gail McKee (campus): After 28 years working at CSU with many different name changes for the same workplace (Bulletin Room, CERC and now URC) and several department changes, Gail McKee is retiring on January 31, 2007. She started at CSU in Facilities and transferred to the Bulletin Room in October of 1979, when it was in Aylesworth Hall. Since 2000 Gail has split her time between the Resource Center and the State 4-H office where she worked on literature and Blue Ribbon Youth Enrollment. She has enjoyed all of the wonderful extension people that she has worked with through the years. It has been fun to travel throughout the state with Joy Bauder and train staff on the Blue Ribbon program and meet everyone in their own offices. Plans for retirement include travel, gardening, volunteer work and more time for hobbies.

Get well wishes to...

Erica Bried (campus) who was hospitalized at the beginning of the year. She is currently recovering at home.

Sympathy to...

Leonard Pruett (Southeast Area) and family on the death of his mother, Mary, on Jan 4, 2007. Services were held in Sun City, Arizona. Donations can be made to: Huger Mercy Living Center, 2345 W Orangewood Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85021.
