Director's Update

October 28, 2008

Budget I have begun discussions with the Regional Directors and Deans regarding how to implement several budget reduction scenarios that have been requested by the President. We have been asked to develop plans for reductions in the 1% to 5% range. The magnitude of any potential budget reduction remains unknown at the present time and depends on decreases in state revenue resulting from the current economic situation. While these situations are always stressful, I remain optimistic that we will maintain our excellent outreach and engagement with Colorado residents.

From President Penley: “Whether decreases in state revenues, if they develop, will occur in time and scope so as to require mid-year budget rescissions during FY09 is unclear, but given that the vast majority of our expenditures are as salaries and that we are already more than 25 percent complete with this fiscal year, I have chosen to move forward with an effort to develop appropriate planning scenarios. To accomplish this, I have asked our vice presidents and deans to develop a variety of budget reduction scenarios covering both FY09 and FY10. “

Congratulations to Kipp Nye, who has been named Honorary Colonel of the Colorado State Patrol. Kipp will be one of the newest members as of October 31, 2008. The purpose of the Honorary Colonel’s Program is to foster interest and understanding in law enforcement, and in particular, the Colorado State Patrol.

Fact sheets We have excellent and talented faculty and staff who have the technical expertise to write, review and update fact sheets. Our goal is that all CSU Extension publications be peer-reviewed and up-to-date. Since July 2008, the communications division of CSU Extension has been working with authors of fact sheets to get all Extension publications updated and reviewed. The CSU Extension website recently removed some publications due to lack of review. I am asking all agents and specialists to work with us to get these publications back on line. Many of the fact sheets just need to be reviewed by subject matter experts and approved regarding content. I urge you to work with us to develop procedures that will meet our goal of delivering excellent, research-based information.
